{Review & Giveaway} Name A Star after your favorite person for a wonderful Gift!

Disclosure: I got this product free for this review.

What better way to give a gift that lasts a lifetime than to name a star after someone you care about?  With Name A Star, you will have the opportunity to purchase an unnamed star in the galaxy, name it after someone, provide a personal message from you to him or her, then receive a special certificate to show off!

For this review, I named a star after my youngest, my daughter.  She recently celebrated her 6th birthday, and I thought it would make a wonderful and unique gift for her.  I wrapped the certificate like a birthday gift, and when she opened it, I explained all about how there is now a star

How Cooking Works - Book Review

9780756690045H I don't know if it's a "homeschooler thing" or just my love of learning, but I especially enjoy the opportunity to turn something into a learning experience - and that's just what "How Cooking Works" does. It takes a children's cookbook with basic yet appealing recipes and mixes in modest nuggets of science - a lovely little cooking / science fusion book to feed your mind and your belly at the same time. The book has some incredibly easy, but oh so important to start with recipes, like how to boil an egg or basic muffins. These are the foundations upon which we all build our cooking skills and it is nice to see them included. The layout takes you through the day starting with items such as pancakes, granola breakfast bars and fruit smoothies. On the way we are asked questions such as "Why are thick pancakes full of air bubbles?" and "Why does granola turn golden brown when it is baked?". Then there is a section for snack time (pea & mint soup anyone? or maybe the delicious rice balls we made

The Smithsonian Book of Natural History

51YFGlUGpSL
My husband and I discovered the DK Smithsonian Natural History Book completely by accident. We were browsing in Chapters and someone had left a copy atop a display of biographies. It caught Jeff's eye and I returned alone a couple of weeks later and bought him a copy for Christmas. First of all the 'tech specs'. The beautiful hardcover is 235 x 159mm, 648 pages, a full 7 lbs in weight and is described as : "A landmark in reference publishing and overseen and authenticated by the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, Natural History presents an unrivaled visual survey of Earth's natural history. Book review: Secrets of the Realm by Bev Stout

Blamed for her uncle's death, fifteen-year-old Annie is on the run. Knowing the perils she will face on the streets of 18th century London, Annie disguises herself as a boy. Her life changes course when she becomes Captain Hawke’s cabin boy. Not only must Annie work alongside the Realm's motley crew of outcasts and gentlemen, she must also keep her superstitious shipmates from discovering she is a girl. Annie vows she will never leave the Realm, where dreams are chased, shattered lives can mend, and secrets are stowed like keepsakes in an old desk drawer. But when Annie’s past catches up with her, can she stay on the Realm? More importantly, will she have a choice?

My review: Secrets of the Realm is an enjoyable YA book and a welcome break from the current vampire/witches and paranormal trend. And while many other novels set in that

Make A Happy Bee Garden

Displaying Make a Happy Bee Garden.jpg
Making bees happy is an easy task and a fun way to create a garden that attracts these beneficial insects. A happy bee garden promotes overall environmental health as honeybees are on a drastic decline lately. In order to make a happy bee garden you need to plant flowers they love, provide a water source, and provide a little shelter when it gets hot out. Here is a quick guide to make your bees happy and get them to come back to your garden all year to pollinate your flowers and vegetables.
The best way to attract bees to your garden is to plant wildflowers that are native to your area. One thing to remember is that the honey produced from one swarm of bees is directly related to the types of flowers that they are helping to pollinate in that specific geographic area. What’s interesting is that even a bee hive located a few miles down the road will have honey that tastes different. Happy bees have a diversity of plants and flowers to choose from. Make sure to not only to plant native wildflowers but go ahead and mix in other gardening favorites.
Flowers that have a single row of petals are more attractive to bees as they are easier for them to get the nectar from. Many layers of petals are harder for the honeybees and they don’t visit them as often. The single petal flowers also have more pollen than other flowers, which provides more food for the honeybees.
Bees are naturally attracted to certain colors more than others. They gravitate towards yellow, white, blue, and purple flowers. Of course they will pollinate others, but these colors are their favorites. Another thing to remember is to plant flowers that bloom at different times of the year so the bees will have a reason to come back to your garden all year long. Bees are hungry and spend the majority of their time in search for nectar.
If you live in the colder regions of the US, a happy bee garden would include flowers like Crocuses, Foxglove, Geraniums, Hyacinths, Roses, and Lilacs. Bees love to pollinate fruits and vegetable plants as well and will visit blueberries, blackberries, tomatoes, and peas.
In areas where there are milder winters with warm summers, these bees prefer Asters, Black-Eyed Susans, Clovers, Cosmos, Crocuses, Daylilies, Foxglove, Geraniums, Marigolds, Roses, and Zinnias. Make the bees happy by also planting strawberries, blackberries, tomatoes, and cherry trees.

The hottest zones in the southern states also have a great collection of native bees. The bees in the south like the nectar from Cosmos, Dahlias, Geraniums, Hibiscus, Hollyhocks, Marigolds, Poppies, Roses, Sunflowers, and Zinnias and even most cacti.  Don’t forget to plant watermelons, squash plants, pumpkins, cucumbers, and their absolute favorite are citrus trees!

Make Your Own Gifts - A Book Review

 photo 305.jpg
If you are looking for a gift for a child who likes crafts, then a great option would be a copy of “Make Your Own Gifts” from Dorling Kindersley. This great hard back book has over 50 wonderful projects to make lovely handmade gifts for all occasions.

There are very simple step-by-step instructions along with the clear, detailed photographs that Dorling Kindersley do so well. This means that children of all ages and abilities can find something in this book that they can make. Some projects will need some adult help but others are completely child friendly for them to create by themselves.
 photo 308.jpg
Handmade gifts can be so much more meaningful than their store bought counterparts and “Make your own Gifts” even has instructions on how to make your own wrapping paper, gift bags and gift tags! That way you can make the gift and wrap it in a truly personal way.
From pom-pom scarves and felt animal bags, pop art cup cakes and flowerpot lollies to rocket pen pots, a polar bear savings bank and glass jar candle holders there truly is something for everyone to make and everyone to receive. Many of the crafts could be adapted for different occasions. For example the candle glass jars are decorated in flowers in the book but we have plans to make our decorative pieces easter eggs and use them on the dinner table.
Evey has already suggested we make one with Dr.Who decorations for her sister -  I just have to work out how to make a tissue paper Tardis
 photo 309.jpg
I am off now to supervise the creation of some glass jar candle holders and some gift bags from cereal boxes – wish me luck!

{Review} A Sweet Night of Slumber with the Most Comfortable Hypoallergenic Pillow

How many of us have trouble sleeping?  How many also suffer from neck or back pain that interrupt a good night sleep?  Well, if you are anything like me, it is both.

Finding a pillow that supports my head and neck, yet also comforms to the shape of my neck so as to be comfortable rather than hard has been quite a challenge.  The pillows I usually use, tend to flatten and get misshaped within a couple of months of use.  They start out being too big and bulky, then quickly lose their

{Personal Review} I'm in Tears - seriously! Divergent Series by Veronica Roth

Ok, I wasn't going to read it.  Really!
I said that all those people claiming it was too much like Hunger Games but not nearly as good had convinced me to just avoid reading it so I wouldn't waist my precious time.  But, when a good friend mentioned recently that her book club was reading Divergent by Veronica Roth and she absolutely loved it - well, I just couldn't resist.  After all, what would it hurt to just read the first book to see what is was like.

Now, I'm in tears - seriously!  I was crying so hard - I actually sobbed!  My youngest was sitting here in the living room with me watching her favorite morning shows, while I'm finishing book 3! Yes, Book 3 of the

(Review) The Spark: A Mother's Story of Nurturing Genius By Kristine Barnett

I was never much of a fan of non-fiction. Instead, I always liked to immerse myself into fictional tales of almost any genre – visiting far off lands and far off lives and being able to leave them when I closed the pages. Then I was bought a copy of “The Spark” the only book that has every caused me to make a life altering decision.

Kristine Barnett’s son, Jake, is diagnosed with autism at the age of two. Kristine and her husband Michael are devastated when they are told he is so badly affected he might never even tie his own shoe laces and they follow the expert advice to put him into a special
